I was thinking about the potential for solar energy.... I figured it could also be a way to genuinely help Africa at the same time. If we invested our "aid" to some of these countries in helping to create "Solar Farms" in some of these countries which naturally see a lot of sunlight...ie...they're baking hot....and assisted with the infrastructure, two things could happen....
1) we could start weening ourselves off our oil addiction
2) some of these third world countries would be able to export energy and start becoming self sufficient again....
This obviously doesn't have to just focus on Africa, but it seemed to me to be the continent where solar could be used to really benefit everyone.....the key would be for these solar farms to be nationalised so the nation states that introduced them would have money to spend on their own infrastructure...rather than large conglomerates coming in, using the resources and taking the profits (Shell in Nigeria anyone!!).
Not quite on the climate crisis topic but relevant to Bruce's comments...

the weather channel is part of teh complax causing the problem...the corps they work for stand to lose short term from GW and thus deny it. unfortunate yet true.
i guarantee you that not ONE peer reviewed piece of evidence exists to say gloabl warming isnt a real and immediate issue.
just incase you dont know, peer reviewed relates to the credability of a source. any one can express an opinion, by scientific knowledge, to be considered truly credible needs to eb published in journals that are reviewed by many other scientists who can decied if its reliable or not.
plenty of scientists can come out saying whatever they want, however the only real way to assume cred is through teh peer reviewing system. so far nothing contradicts the global warming evidence and thus its as close to fact as anything could be
dont get me wrong, id love to think it wanst real, if it was id likely give up my degree and go surfing for the rest fo my life..lol, but its a fact. the worlds in danger.

As an engineering and science student, what we need to do is known and known well. Action required is immediate, though it doenst happen. This is owing to, imo, the fact that policy makers are held ransom to the corporations that stand to lose billions in teh short term, and, possibly the excesses currently in western coffers will be compromised.
what we need is simply policy change.
further research could be used positivly as well, so im gonna say b, c

I think we need to treat Global Warming like the emergency it is. That means huge changes for everyone. Work from Home. Drive very little. Use bicycles. Turn off the lights. Turn off the TV. Any solution that keeps people comfortably using electricity and gas is not going to work. It is time to be uncomfortable together.

Not many people are aware that the big electricity producers are reducing the cost of power to big industries that use massive amounts of it. They do this because we turn off lights to save power. Help me lobby the government to outlaw this practice untill the power producers have switched to clean generating methods, wind, solar, geothermal tidal and river currents all produce clean power. But the political will to act has to come from people power joining sites like this and mine
The temp could rise 4 degrees over the next twenty years, no matter what we do. This means you should move to higher ground if your less that 10 meters above sea level.

I believe we (humanity) should do B, C, and D simultaneously:
B: We need to unite, research, and decide what we are willing (agree) to do; individually, collectively, and nationally.
C: We also need to begin taking action on things we know we can do now, now!
D: Lastly, we need an "other" economic model which is not based on debt, peoples labor, and the environment.
The Industrial Age economic model creates money out of thin air and requires the living people and the Earth pay the bill in labor and natures resources. When peoples labor pays the bill a debt crisis is eventually created with poverty the inevitable result; when nature pays the bill the environment is damaged. Only a few hundred years old, this economic model based on competition and conflict has left our children a legacy of debt and a withering planetary environment.

To address our climate crisis will require building local economy models which utilize digital products as the basis of the value, not the environment. What we'll need is a new globally viable model that will include those who were left out of Industrialized society.
Information Age tools can relieve pressure on people and the environment. Achieving this goal will require a common global community where even the poor can access digital wealth using a free peer to peer Information Age economic system where "value" is created from human elements of creativity (music, words, art) rather than natural resources. A equal system where one can shoot an animal video instead of an animal, and provide wealth for their family earned by digital sales to a global audience. Prosperity Program in conjunction with Peace Portal Humanitarian Trust, and the FDU can meet this bold goal. - Attachments:
